The Wuyuanhe Stadium is located in the provincial capital Haikou of the tropical island Hainan and is part of an overall master plan for an extensive cultural and sports complex. After a construction period of only 15 months, the stadium was completed in 2018 and is now used to host national and international sports competitions as well as cultural events.
A special feature is the asymmetrical building height, which is due to the local conditions. The significantly higher western grandstand opens towards the sea, providing not only an impressive view but also natural shade and ventilation. The grandstand is spanned by a one-sided membrane roof whose translucent material supplies the stadium’s interior with daylight. From a structural point of view, the ring supported cable structure consists of two outer compression rings and one inner tension ring.
A circular path above the grandstands offers visitors a spectacular panoramic view of the city and the sea.
