The Jingdong Headquarters is located in Chengdu, southwestern China, and serves as the headquarters of JD.com, one of the world’s largest online retailers. The eleven-story building consists of three volumes rotated and stacked at right angles, forming a figure-eight shape. This configuration creates green courtyards and rooftop gardens within the sculptural architecture. The new construction offers flexible office spaces with views of the green areas and natural lighting for all workstations. In addition to the representative public spaces on the ground floor, shared areas are located on the intermediate levels, benefiting from spacious terraces on each level.
Nine solid building cores bear the majority of the loads, allowing for maximum flexibility for the approximately 12,500 square meters of floor space. The cores are evenly distributed throughout the building, forming the primary structural system of the building. Additional columns also bridge the covered outdoor areas and carry the loads down to the underground parking levels.
The facade is folded in a zigzag pattern and consists of a combination of slender vertical glass panels and concrete elements, incorporating individually operable ventilation panels. Depending on the viewing angle, the building envelope appears transparent or closed, giving the building a distinctive presence in the urban space.
