The new Century Lotus Sports Park in Foshan includes a stadium, a natatorium and other sports facilities and was built for the 12th Guangdong Province Sports Meeting in 2006.
The stadium is used as a track and field stadium and for football games. The steel cable structure of the roof is based on the principle of a spoked wheel and covered by a folded membrane, which not only covers the stands but the outer concourses as well.
Located on a green hill, with its circular form and its huge, white membrane roof the stadium appears like an open lotus blossom and became a symbol for the games of 2006. The unique silhouette of the stadium can also be seen from the water front promenade in the south of the city, adding an imposing and monumental shape to the cityscape of the new Foshan.
Beside the Stadium, schlaich bergermann partner was also commissioned the structural design of the nearby swimming pool, covered by a folded membrane structure supported by steel arches.
